Tom Loegering completes 48-state Double Insanity Iron Butt charity ride

Tom Loegering aka “the SC Rider” returned home after a 20-day ride around the country. The goal was to touch each of the lower 48 states once, then turn around and do it again on the way home! “I do it for myself, because I love being out on my motorcycle, but really I’m doing it for the kids!” Tom said. Tom began the trip on June 5, 2023 in Needles, California, and returned to Needles 19 days, 43 minutes and 14,784 miles later with a printed receipt from every state he crossed—twice! “It was good to get away, but boy is it good to be home! I missed my wife and my recliner,” he said.

Ed. Note: Tom will be featured on Episode 63 of 200 Miles Before Breakfast, the podcast letting you get to know the MOA one member at a time. Look for its release in late August.

This is Tom’s third double insanity charity ride. His first one was at 75 years old, second at 80, and now this one at 85. “And I will do it again at 90”, Tom says, “I have two passions in life—riding my motorcycle and teaching life lessons through golf to kids.”

Tom is the founder Golf Program in Schools, a non-profit that benefits kids having a brighter future through teaching courtesy, respect, honesty and integrity through finding their right PATH (Persistence, Achievement, Trustworthiness and a Healthy lifestyle).

Tom does this through his award-winning, fully inclusive program introducing kids to the life lessons and lifelong benefits of playing golf, a healthy outdoor game that can be played throughout a person’s whole life and one that is not taught in school! “Golf incorporates so many of life’s lessons and I incorporate those in the classes I teach in schools. Golf helps get the kids involved and paying attention. I teach the kids the importance of making a plan, executing the plan, analyzing the results, making adjustments, then execute the plan again. This is an important lesson throughout life and golf, so you don’t get stuck making the same mistake over and over or get stuck with bad habits,” Tom said.

At 85, Tom is an inspiration to kids and adults too, that want to make a difference. You can be part of this program as a volunteer, sponsor or donor. “We will take all the help we can get in whatever form we can get it,” says Tom. “A lot of what we need volunteer wise can be done remotely.”
